If you’re starting to plan what you can do over the festive season, Swindon and Wiltshire have a lot to offer. From taking the children to meet Father Christmas to enjoying chilly winter walks, there’s so much to do.
Father Christmas is making some special visits to Lacock Abbey this year. Just 35 miles from Swindon, Lacock Abbey has played many roles throughout its 800 years of history. From an Augustinian abbey to a Tudor home, it’s even played a starring role as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. The surrounding village is entirely owned by the National Trust and it’s like taking a trip through time. For a few days over December, Father Christmas will be in his festive kitchen with gifts and stories for the children.
What’s better to get you into the Christmas spirit than hundreds of Santa’s racing for charity. On the 3rd December, Lydiard Park is holding its fifth Santa Fun Run. Supporting the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Swindon’s Down’s Syndrome Group, last year over 370 people of all ages took part. The 5km course follows the perimeter of Lydiard Park and if you choose to take part you’ll get given your Santa suit to race in. You can always just watch from the sidelines and cheer on the hundreds of Santa’s. It’s sure to be a merry sight.
If wrapping up warm and going for a wintry walk is your thing, Wiltshire has some beautiful areas to explore. From the parks within Swindon such as Queen’s Park and The Lawn to Moulden Hill and Calstone Down further afield. Discover hidden tracks near your home that you never knew were there. From ancient burial mounds to Georgian estates, take a walk back into Wiltshire’s past.
If you want to start your Christmas shopping or even plan for the Boxing Day sales, the McArthur Glen Swindon Designer Outlet is the perfect place. For the children there’s a Cadbury’s shop as well as the ever popular Build-a-Bear Workshop. There are plenty of places for lunch so you can enjoy the whole day treating the family. From Gap and John Lewis to M&S and Paperchase, there’s something for everyone. With a play area and a steam train, the children will never get bored.
