As one of the largest towns in Wiltshire, Swindon has plenty on offer this spring/summer time. Whether you’re travelling alone or in a group, there are plenty of fun activities suitable for all ages.
Rated as the #1 thing to do in Swindon on Trip Advisor, the STEAM museum is planning an impressive range of additions this Easter. This includes two new exhibitions about the Great Western Railway publicity department and its role in their history. It will also be hosting family-orientated ‘logo-motion’ activities at this time, where you can create and then take home your own company logo. History lovers will be treated to a variety of in-depth exhibitions on the history of steam and railway all year round. And for those who enjoy a little more of the clothing rails than train railways, the museum is right next to the Swindon Designer Outlet Centre, so shoppers can have their fill too!
Running from the 7th – 19th of May, the 25th annual Swindon Festival of Literature provides ample opportunity to broaden your cultural horizons. Poets, historians, philosophers and much more are there to talk about their work; Judy Murray, A C Grayling and Harriet Harman are some of the famous names that will be appearing. With a huge range of interesting topics being discussed, attendees are likely to be left with some serious food for thought.
A listed building, or structure, has been judged to be of national importance in terms of architectural or historic interest. With 14 Grade I listed buildings and a huge amount of those in grades II, III and IV, Swindon provides a serious testament to British heritage. One of these listed structures is the Spectrum building, which was used in the James Bond film, A View to a Kill.
Taking over the Steam Museum from the 11th – 13th of May, Swindon Gin Festival will be bringing an exceptional amount of gin to the town. Free samples and the opportunity to chat to gin distillers are some of the things to look forward to. However, due to the presence of alcohol, the event is strictly for over 18’s only.
Swindon is home to the beautiful 74-hectare Stanton Park. A Local Nature Reserve, it provides lovely views of its vast woodlands and large lake. The park has two scheduled walking events for this period, whilst more could still be announced. Check out Stanton Park, and keep fit whilst enjoying a first-class experience of the natural environment.
