Here at Emerald Windows and Doors, we’re lucky enough to be based in the beautiful South West of England. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and historic sites, we often find ourselves in lovely towns and cities delivering our home improvements. Marlborough is a charming Wiltshire market town, just over 10 miles away from us here in Swindon. If you’re ever nearby, don’t miss out on the top five things Marlborough has to offer.
Marlborough’s high street is an attraction in itself. It is the second widest in Britain after Stockton-on-Tees and still retains its rustic and historical charm. The town has a lot of history attached to it. William the Conqueror built a castle here in 1100 and Henry VIII’s doomed adviser Cardinal Wolsey was ordained here. According to legend, Merlin, the wizard associated with King Arthur, is even supposed to be buried in land now belonging to Marlborough college.
This house has stood on Marlborough’s high street since 1653. Once owned by a silk merchant, this beautiful timber building still retains its original room pattern. It’s available for guided tours from April to October.
If you’re a music lover, you’ll love this. Every summer the town plays host to a wide variety of jazz musicians from across the world. Pubs and other venues have concerts and the town is alive with the sound of music all weekend. It’s a fun event that the whole family can enjoy.
The Preshute or Marlborough white horse is one of nine in Wiltshire. Believed to be created in 1804 by a group of schoolboys, it can be seen across the town. There are hill figures dotted across England but horses seem to be the most popular with the Uffington horse in Oxfordshire believed to have been created during the Bronze Age.
There has been a forest in the area of Savernake since 934 AD. This ancient woodland is a Site of Scientific Interest due to the number of historically important and old trees. The oldest, ‘Big Belly’, is believed to be at least 1000 years old. It’s a beautiful place to walk and enjoy being out enjoying nature at its best. With over 2750 acres, it’s the perfect place to get away from it all.
