Here at Emerald, we are proud to be registered installers of the Residence Collection, which is the market-leading design for flush sash, timber effect uPVC casement windows. The collection is a popular choice for homeowners wanting more luxury windows and for those living in a conservation area or listed building.
The Residence collection consists of R7, R9 and R² windows, all of which look identical from the outside, with a perfectly flush exterior. Whilst all deliver on style and energy efficiency, each type has slight differences that set them apart from each other.
We have put together this informative blog to help you understand everything you need to know about R7 and R9 windows, including which system may be better suited to you and your home.
Residence 9 windows are designed to authentically replicate 19th century timber designs by incorporating traditional aesthetics. This, combined with the use of modern materials and innovative manufacturing, means that the R9 window is the perfect solution for homeowners aiming for an authentic timber-effect window, without the hassle of ‘real’ timber frames.
R9 windows take inspiration from historical British design and are manufactured to adhere to UK conservation guidelines. Because of this, compared with R7 windows, R9 windows are typically better suited to heritage properties.
Residence 7 windows are the modern option out of the two, with the main aesthetical difference being their flush sash exterior and interior. For this reason, R7 windows tend to be popular with contemporary homes.
The frame of R9 is 100mm, and R7 is 75mm.
Both R9 and R7 windows are available in 28mm double glazing or 44mm triple glazing.
The Residence Collection systems can achieve great thermal efficiency with u-values as low as 0.7 with triple glazing.
Both R7 and R9 windows can achieve excellent energy ratings of A+ due to their heat trapping chambers. Whilst most window frames tend to have 3 or 5 chambers, as their names suggest, Residence 7 have 7 and Residence 9 have 9. This results in superior thermal, security and acoustic performance.
The joints on Residence 9 frames are butted together to create an authentic appearance that has the traditional look of timber.
The joints on Residence 7 are available in different options. For example, a mitre weld will fuse the joints together diagonally for a contemporary appearance, or the graf weld for a seamless diagonal weld. The different manufacturing styles makes the R7 frame versatile, so can be catered to both traditional and modern homes.
There are over 26 colourways to choose from, including Painswick, Irish Oak, Clotted Cream, Cotswold Green, Silvered Oak and English Oak.
Not all colours are available in both systems, for example Rosewood is only available for R7 windows, and Cotswold Biscuit is only available for R9 windows.
For a full list of the colours available, contact the team and request a Residence Collection colour palette.
Residence Collection windows can come with a selection of bespoke accessories including butt hinges, handles, and stays, in a range of colour options, such as Polished Chrome, Graphite and Gold.
The high-quality handles and stays are available in Monkey Tail or Pear Drop designs.
Residence Collection systems are approved and have been installed in many conservation areas and listed buildings across the UK. This is always a huge relief to homeowners, as they save the cost and hassle of real timber windows.
Whilst we are unable to apply for planning permission on behalf of our customer, we can supply a conservation and planning brochure and CAD drawings, which can help with planning.
As luxurious as windows from the Residence Collection are, they are more expensive than other uPVC casement windows on the market.
As a similar alternative, that is more budget-friendly, we recommend our Infinity Flush casement windows.
